For many years researchers held the belief that insomnia was a symptom of a problem rather than a psychological or biological disorder. Early research however, conducted by the University of Pittsburgh and published in
Psychiatric News, demonstrated that insomnia deserves a title of its own, and the status of a "clinical syndrome" requiring medical attention. Studies conducted by other research facilities showed patients often felt the need to treat insomnia on their own, rather than seek professional advice from a qualified doctor. That has changed however, thanks to modern research and growing support from doctors that insomnia deserves the same attention as any other physiological, biological or psychological condition.
Researchers now agree doctors can use diagnostic criteria to evaluate whether a person has insomnia, and if so, what type of insomnia they have. What does this mean for patients? They can now feel comfortable approaching a doctor about insomnia symptoms and receive proper care. For some, this means doctors will treat an underlying condition, one like chronic pain, that may contribute to sleepless nights. For others, this may mean treating primary insomnia or insomnia that results as a syndrome of its own.
What's all the Fuss About?
Patients with insomnia often feel irritable or depressed daily. After not sleeping for several days or months, a person may find they do not want to socialize, and experience many unpleasant insomnia side effects. These can include loss of memory, poor concentration, chronic fatigue and other physical and psychological symptoms. These symptoms may impair a person's ability to work well or communicate with friends and familiy. It is critical for people with insomnia to seek proper care from a doctor. Doctors have an obligation to diagnose patients and treat them properly. When patients with insomnia receive proper care and sleep well, they often find the quality of their life improves dramatically.
