Definition: Alprazolam, or Xanax, is a short-acting benzodiazepine medication commonly used to treat anxiety, insomnia, depression and related disorders. Considered highly addictive because of its short half-life, doctors prescribe the smallest dose possible to achieve satisfactory results in patients.
