Definition: Ambien is a brand name sleep medication commonly used to treat insomnia. This insomnia treatment works as a sedative hypnotic, causing someone to become sleepy so they can fall asleep easily. Ambien is made of the drug zolpidem. Most healthcare providers prescribe for short-term use of occasional insomnia or chronic insomnia.
