Question: When Should I See My Doctor About Insomnia?

How Severe Should Insomnia Be Before Visiting My Doctor?

Many people, in fact millions of people suffer from chronic insomnia. Sometimes the cause is a biochemical reaction in the body. Hormone fluctuations during menstruation or menopause for example, can cause insomnia. Most people try an over-the-counter remedy when they experience insomnia. But when is insomnia severe enough to justify a trip to the doctor?

Answer: If you suffer from chronic or primary insomnia, or have difficulty sleeping 3 or more times each week for several weeks, you should schedule an appointment to speak with your healthcare provider. Chronic insomnia is a serious condition. When left untreated, it can lead to many other health problems including:

  • anxiety
  • irritability
  • depression
  • anger
  • chronic illness
If you have insomnia, your doctor is the best person to recommend appropriate treatment.

Sometimes the causes for insomnia are not obvious. Some people suffer insomnia caused by chronic health conditions. A common example is pain. People with arthritis for example, often suffer from chronic pain and insomnia. If you have an underlying condition that contributes to your insomnia, it is important your doctor evaluate and treat this condition before he or she can address your sleep disorder.
