Too Much TV Linked to Insomnia in Adults and Children

Monday October 8, 2007
For years now researchers have known television can interfere with your ability to sleep. Watching too much TV is just as dangerous for children however, as it is for adults. Recent reports suggest children that watch 2 or more hours of television each day may be at risk for insomnia or related sleep disorders. The same may be true of adults that watch too much sleep.

Watching too much television may also contribute to other chronic health conditions including obesity. To help discourage late night TV viewing, observe the following good habits:

  1. Avoid keeping a TV in your bedroom or in your child's bedroom.
  2. Avoid working in bed or using your computer late at night, which can contribute to problems sleeping.
  3. Make sure you practice healthy sleep habits and set up a bedtime routine that is sleep promoting, to reduce the odds of chronic insomnia.
Discover what other triggers may cause insomnia, and healthy steps you can take to say goodnight to insomnia.
